Michael A. Friedman is President and Chief Executive Officer of City of Hope, a cancer research and treatment institution dedicated to innovation in basic and clinical biomedical research and delivery of compassionate, world-class patient care. Friedman was formerly senior vice president of research and development, medical and public policy, for Pharmacia Corporation. In addition, he served as chief medical officer for biomedical preparedness at the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America following the events of September 11, 2001. Friedman had previously served as Food and Drug Administration (FDA) deputy commissioner and was later tapped by the Clinton administration to serve as acting commissioner of the agency. He helped to streamline the FDA’s review and approval process and provided oversight of evaluations for drugs, biologics, medical devices and food ingredients.
In 1983, Friedman joined the Division of Cancer Treatment at the National Cancer Institute (NCI), and went on to become the associate director of the division’s Cancer Therapy Evaluation Program. Before joining the NCI, Friedman spent nearly a decade at the University of California at San Francisco, serving as associate professor of medicine, and interim director of the Cancer Research Institute. Friedman has received numerous commendations, including the Surgeon General’s Medallion in 1999. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree, magna cum laude, from Tulane University and a Doctorate in Medicine from the University of Texas. He completed postdoctoral training at Stanford University and the NCI, and is board certified in internal medicine and medical oncology.

As president of the Global Health Program, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Dr. Tadataka (Tachi) Yamada leads the foundation's efforts to help develop and deliver low-cost, life-saving health tools for the developing world. He oversees our global health grant portfolio and Global Health Advocacy.
Before joining the foundation, Yamada served as Chairman of Research and Development and was a member of the Board of Directors at GlaxoSmithKline. Prior to that, he was chairman of the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Michigan Medical School and Physician-in-Chief at the University of Michigan Medical Center.
Yamada is a past president of the American Gastroenterological Association and the Association of American Physicians, a master of the American College of Physicians, and a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Science in the United States and the Academy of Medical Sciences in the United Kingdom.

Warner C. Greene, M.D., Ph.D., is President of the Accordia Global Health Foundation (f/k/a Academic Alliance Foundation) whose mission is to overcome the burden of infectious diseases by leading efforts to expand healthcare capacity and strengthen academic medical institutions in Africa. Dr. Greene is also the Director, and Nick and Sue Hellmann Distinguished Professor of Translational Medicine of the Gladstone Institute of Virology and Immunology and is Professor of Medicine, Microbiology and Immunology at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). Dr. Greene also serves as co-director of the UCSF-Gladstone Center for AIDS Research.
His research focuses on studies of the molecular basis for HIV and HTLV-I retroviral Pathogenesis and the biochemical mechanisms underlying the regulation and action of the NF-kB/Rel family of eukaryotic transcription factors. The author of more than 300 scientific papers, Dr. Greene has been honored by outstanding investigator awards from the American Federation for Clinical Research and the American College of Rheumatology and has been recognized by the Institute for Scientific Information as one of the 100 most-cited scientists in the world. Dr. Greene is a fellow of the American Physicians, and a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies.

Dr. Richard G. Fessler is a professor of Neurosurgery
at Northwestern's Feinberg School of Medicine and the director
of Northwestern's new NeuroMusculoskeletal Institute (NMSI)
in Chicago. He is an international researcher, inventor and educator
with expertise in artificial spinal discs, minimally invasive surgical
techniques and stem cell transplantation for spinal cord injury.
Dr. Fessler has made key contributions in the development of several
innovative spinal technologies including the BRYAN® Cervical Disc
System which is expected to have FDA approval in early 2008. He has
published more than 15 books and 100 peer reviewed manuscripts.
He is a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons,
the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, the North American Spine Society,
and the Joint Section in Disorders of the Spine and Peripheral Nerves,
as well as several other regional, national, and international professional
organizations.
He graduated from the University of Chicago Medical School and is
currently a student at the McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago
working on a Masters of Divinity. He is certified by the American
Board of Neurological Surgery and currently holds a license in Illinois.
